Welcome to Karavanke

One of the longest mountain ranges in Europe, a valuable park located between the urban and tourist centres of the Gorenjska and Koroška region on its south side and Austrian Carinthia on its north side. Steep slopes, peaks with wonderful views, mountains, valleys, gorges, waterfalls, diverse flora and fauna, breathtaking countryside and rich cultural heritage. All this and more can be said about Karavanke.

We invite you to get to know, explore and experience Karavanke, to use opportunities this wonderful mountain range has to offer and to realise how important it is to protect it.

About the Project

Due to its unique countryside, the border region of Karavanke has a high potential to further develop its economy and tourism. A higher traffic load and exploitation of natural sources, predominantly in the forestry, lead to clashes between environmentalists and proponents of such development. That is why 15 partner organisations from both sides of the border, Slovene and Austrian, developed a project called karavanke@prihodnost.eu – Nature-Based Economies in the European Future Region Karavanke, and, after successfully applying to the Operational Programme Slovenia-Austria 2007-2013, they began carrying out activities aimed at nature conservation and developing policies and specific cases of how to manage the high potential of Karavanke.

The project is being carried out within the European Territorial Cooperation, the Operational Programme Slovenia-Austria 2007-2013, and is being co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
